On Composing

“Imagination creates reality”

— Richard Wagner

The "rules" of composing music, i.e. the "engineering part" have changed on an ongoing basis in the past. We are now looking at over 700 years of classical music compositions, and it's not over yet. The engineering underlying the music that you hear has changed a lot over time, which has provided a very fertile ground for music theorists.

For somebody who loves to listen to the classical music of the past (well, most of it) and who has music in his head all day and who wants to compose his own music, what style of music should he or she follow?

My thoughts on music theory and what styles I have played with and am still playing with in order to arrive at a style that really suits me.
