Rolf’s Music Overview (My Early Work)
“Imagination creates reality”
— Richard Wagner
All my music that you can hear here was converted into sound using the NotePerformer and Sibelius computer software. It is absolutely fantastic that I can compose music for say a flute, an instrument that I cannot play and because of the software can hear more or less what my music will sound like.
At times, the software does strange things, such as if a piano note jumps up or down more than some minimum the software decides to play the next note a lot louder than intended. Using slurs and other notation elements can also lead to some sound surprises. Still, it is great that I can compose and hear piano music that I, with my rather modest piano playing skills, could never play on a piano myself!
The biggest drawback is of course that a computer cannot play music like a human being. Maybe one day I luck out, and someone will want to play my music without charging me for the time in practicing and recording it.
One other issue is that while the playback software does a surprising good job in playing a cello, flute and piano some other instruments, like the violin or oboe are such that I prefer to use a flute rather than a violin, for example. Having a decent quality loudspeaker will of course make a big difference as well, so please don’t listen to the music on your cell phone!
I have broken the music into separate sections as shown below. By clicking on one of the following links, you’ll will be taken to an overview page from where you can also replay a particular piece of music.
