When Two Fall In Love

For Flute & Piano

I wrote this sometime in 2016.  I had been thinking about how I would show the process of 2 falling in love in the form of a musical “story”.

A flute and cello who have never met before come together on a sunny morning.  The flute plays her melody to be polite and say Hello!  The flute’s melody is quite sweet while the cello’s melody is more “manly”.

They try to see if their melodies could somehow work together, but initially it only works if the one pauses while the other one plays a section of his or her melody.

Doing that gave them enough time to become interested in each other, so they carry on “talking” to each other. The flute decides that it might be a good idea to show off a bit and play a longer line including some elements of the cello’s melody as well.  Needless to say the cello is ready to do the same.

So the time comes to let any prepared scripts go and instead see if they can make new music together and since this is a love story they do.  They realize is not “mine” or “his” music anywhere it has become “our” music.
Love is in the air and the flute and cello celebrate this with a resounding jubilation at the end!

In my first version, I wanted to also show when things are not going great and their music is not “coming together” at all.  That will create dissonances that will have to be sorted out, of course.  Trying to do this made me feel that I needed to have someone explain what is happening for each section as a narrator, but that was not where I wanted to go with this piece so I left everything like a romance made in heaven.

I hope you have enjoyed my music! I'd love to hear your comments. Feel free to leave a comment below or send me your comments here.
